Small Gestures turned Opportunities for Everyone!
Three years ago, at the urging of Teresa McClendon (SHS Class of 1978), a small group of Sabine High School Graduates began to provide small gestures for classmates who were ill, lost family members or were in need of support. Over time, the group gained a few more classmates and this summer collected far more donations than ever before. Collectively, we decided to use our resources to establish a small scholarship fund. Once the decision to provide Scholarships was made, the group grew, donations increased, momentum intensified and the group got busy and formed the Sabine Alumni Scholarship Fund at Kilgore College. The Alumni Scholarship is designated for Sabine High School Graduates who are nominated by the SHS Counselor’s and Principal’s Office and accepted to Kilgore College. The scholarship funds will be available in the Spring of 2023 and are available to students pursuing an Associate’s Degree in any career field offered at Kilgore College.
Sabine High School Alumni Scholarship Fund, an All School Reunion and Dinner is being held at 6:00 PM. on February 3, 2024, at The Tempest Golf Club, 568 E. Wilkins Road, Gladewater, Texas 75647. The evening will include a seated dinner, a short program, both silent and live auctions, and a raffle. Tickets are $60 per person for dinner. A cash bar will be provided. The host committee includes Leslie Thurston, Carissa Bryan Purcell, Elizabeth White King, Talyna Bennett Carlson, Dena McDougal Snelson, Phyllis Burkett Walker, and Kristin Hudgins Bates.
To purchase tickets to the event, mail checks to Sabine High School Alumni Scholarship Fund, 6144 Old Highway 135, PMB 634, Kilgore, Texas 75662, or you may purchase tickets via the SHS Alumni Scholarship Fund website. If you cannot attend and would like to donate to the SHS Alumni Scholarship Fund, you may use the website DONATE tab, and those donations go directly to Kilgore College to be held in the Scholarship Fund account.
In addition to the newly formed SHS Alumni Scholarship Fund, the J. T. “Red” Russell Endowed Scholarship, established in 2007, is also held at Kilgore College. Sabine High Graduates are eligible to apply to the Endowment for Scholarships to further their studies. This Endowment was established by SHS graduates to honor Mr. (Coach) Russell who served as Head Football Coach from 1948-1955 and Sabine Elementary School Principal from 1956-1968. Students may apply to the J.T. “Red” Russell Endowment Scholarship through the Sabine High School Counselor’s office or Kilgore College. Recipients are selected by the KC Scholarship committee through a blind screening process.
