Who? What? When? Where? & Why.

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Phyllis Burkett Walker, and I am a 1979 graduate of Sabine High School. It has been my pleasure to work on the Inaugural Sabine High School Scholarship Fund Dinner and Reunion with Committee including Leslie Thurston, Dena McDougal Snelson, Elizabeth
White King, and Judge Talyna Bennett Carlson. We are less than two weeks out from the event, and our committee met on Friday to finalize the plans for the evening. We have had a great response and have reservations for right at 100 people from several decades. The committee wanted to make one final
reach out to all of our fellow alumni and encourage you to join us as well. Our final count has to be completed on Friday, January 19 by the end of the day. So, time is short. You can make your reservations at SHS Alumni Scholarship Fund – Donate today!

What are we doing? For those of you who might be wondering what this is all about, let me give you the background. For almost three years, and because of the connections through social media, a small group of high school friends joined together to send flowers and/or food to school friends who suffered illness or loss. Over this time, our group grew in size. Late this past summer, we lost two classmates within a very short period of time. The generosity of this small group was amazing, but the funds were far beyond what food and flowers required. We had a group text exchange, a few of us signed up to launch this effort, and the idea of using our collection to offer a scholarship to a graduate of Sabine High School became the goal. The power of a group of small donations can become significant quickly. Once we put the word out about our intentions, momentum grew. Along the way, the J. T. “Red” Russell Endowment at Kilgore College was brought to the attention of the committee and discussions commenced to discuss how the two efforts could work together. Our committee met with Merlyn Holmes at Kilgore College, and we now have two amazing opportunities for Sabine High School Graduates. By providing these scholarships at Kilgore College, the community will benefit from local talent earning their education and training right here in Kilgore. Teacher, Dancer, Artist, Musician, Nurse, Fireman, Policeman, Welder, Oil Field Technician, and more. We can improve the community by training graduates to earn a degree and serve their communities. We will become the only High School Alumni Scholarship providers in the area ~ doing something no one else is doing. Our goal is to have as much participation as possible from as
many graduates of Sabine High School we can reach. The Russell Endowment sits at $100,000 and will award three $1000 Scholarships for 2022 graduates
who plan to attend Kilgore College and apply for the Scholarship. The Sabine High School Alumni Fund has a separate account at Kilgore College and will be funded by proceeds from the January 22 event. The SHS Alumni Scholarship will be awarded to student(s) graduating in 2022 and will be selected by the
Sabine High School Administration. Students will need to make their Counselor aware of their interest in attending any course of study at Kilgore College including all trade certifications and licensing careers offered. Both of these Scholarships are restricted to students attending Kilgore College Donations may be made to Kilgore College and designate either the permanent J. T. “Red” Russell Endowment or the Sabine High School Alumni Scholarship Fund.

Where are we doing this? We are using the facilities at The Tempest Golf Club in Liberty City for an evening of fun and fellowship. The Tempest has a full-service kitchen, a cash bar available, and Audio/Visual capacities we intend to use on January 22. There is no dress code and we have the club for the entire evening. By doing this event at The Tempest, we didn’t have to have a large group of volunteers work the event and it allowed everyone to enjoy seeing old friends and making new acquaintances. There is plenty of space to accommodate a large group and have a great event.

What you can do? We want you to join us, but if you cannot attend in person, join others who have generously donated to make this a permanent Scholarship Fund www.shsalumnischolarshipfund.com or Give to a Scholarship Kilgore College Foundation Sabine Alumni Scholarship.
